In the s and 50s, there were few greater classical actors in Britain than Alec Clunes. Born into a show business family, he began his career with Ben Greet's company and, later, he worked at the Old Vic Theatre. He played numerous Shakespearian roles and, in , took over the Arts Theatre in London where he remained until Among the plays he presented were "The Lady's Not For Burning" by Christopher Fry, and he gave the actor-playwright Peter Ustinov his first break with his production of "The House of Regrets".
A matinée idol for much of his life in the theatre, his film career was brief but varied. He played "Hastings" to Laurence Olivier's Richard III (), but he was equally at home in stiff upper lip wartime classics such as One of Our Aircraft Is Missing (). In , Clunes married Daphne Alcot and their son Martin was born six years later. Clunes's last work in the theatre included taking over from Rex Harrison in the role of "Henry Higgins" in the musical "My Fair Lady" (). His last stage appearance was in Off-stage, Clunes was an intellectual man, widely read with a deep knowledge of theatre tradition. A th
'I haven't acted since my mother died' Martin Clunes tells how his mother's death changed his life

In a rawly emotional and deeply moving interview, Martin Clunes talks for the first time about his beloved mother's sudden death and how it's utterly changed his life.
Would Martin Clunes have been an actor at all if it hadn't been for his mother? It may have been his father, the classical actor Alec Clunes, who had the thespian training, but it was his mother who dragged him backstage after shows, to fawn over actors he'd never even heard of.
'She was so stagestruck. She was always more interested and excited than me,' he admits. 'Even once I was in the business, if I got a new job, she would be beside herself, saying, "Who is in this series?"
'I'd say, "Well, so-and-so, and so-and-so, and yes Mother, thank you for asking, I'm fine, your granddaughter Emily is fine" But she just loved it. She thought actors were the most marvellous people. It didn't matter who they were at heart. I'd say to her, "But Mum, he beat both his wives to a pulp." She'd say, " Marvellous Hamlet, though."'
