Annie, who grew up in an impoverished Quaker household in Ohio, learnt to shoot at a young age to help put food on the table. She rapidly showed an aptitude for marksmanship and won multiple shooting competitions, drawing the eye of showman Frank E. Butler, whom she later married.
Annie&#;s extraordinary shooting abilities and daring antics, such as firing cigarettes out of people&#;s mouths, established her a celebrity in the entertainment world, and she went on to become one of the most famous ladies of her day.
Annie was a passionate supporter for women&#;s rights and constantly spoke out about the significance of women learning to defend themselves, in addition to her ability with a rifle.

Early Life and CareerAnnie Oakley, born in Darke County, Ohio, was an American sharpshooter and the first American female superstar known for her exceptional marksmanship. She gained fame for her starring role in the show 'Buffalo Bill's Wild West'. One of her most famous tricks involved shooting a playing card in half with a caliber rifle from a distance of 90 feet, before it touched the ground. Oakley is also credited with teaching 15, women how to use firearms, as she believed that women should be able to defend themselves.

Annie Oakley was the sixth child of Susan Wise and Jacob Mosey, who were Quakers. When Oakley was six years old, her father passed away from pneumonia and frostbite. To support her siblings and widowed mother, Oakley began hunting and selling game to the residents of Greenville, Ohio, as well as to restaurants and hotels in southern Ohio. When she was six years old, her father died from pneumonia, and her mother was left to care for her and her five siblings. Her mother remarried, but her second husband also died suddenly, leaving the family with a newborn baby. Because the family did not earn much money, they lived in a poor house, and Oakley who went by “Annie,” was sent to live with the Edington family. Oakley worked with the Edington family at the infirmary where she learned how to sew and helped with the younger children. She later stayed with an abusive family, whom she referred to as “the wolves.” At the age of eight, Oakley started hunting. She would sell the game she shot to local restaurants to help earn money for her family.
