First elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives in , Mary Fallin has had a long career of public service focusing on conservative, commonsense solutions to the challenges our families and businesses face.
As a state legislator, Mary worked in the Republican minority to forge relationships across the aisle and find common ground with the Democratic majority. Mary crafted the state's first "stalker law," which made it a misdemeanor on the first offense to follow or threaten a person maliciously, and a felony on the second. The bill was one of the first state bills in a nationwide attempt to prevent rapes and was signed into law by Democratic Governor David Walters.
Mary also worked in the Oklahoma House to pass a small-business insurance reform act, helping employers acquire and keep affordable health insurance for their employees. Since then, she has continued to work for smart, affordable, free-market reforms to lower health care costs, while leading the charge against the kind of big-government plans proposed by the Clintons in the 90s and President Obama today. After a successful career in the private sector as a manager for a national hotel chain, Fallin made her first foray into public service in when she was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives. This began her long and distinguished career of public service dedicated to conservative, commonsense solutions to the challenges facing Oklahoma families and small businesses.
During her time in the House, Fallin earned a reputation as a consensus builder who was willing to reach across the aisle. Serving in the Republican minority, she managed to pass more than a dozen bills that were signed into law by the state’s Democratic governor, including Oklahoma’s first “anti-stalker law” and measures aimed at improving the business climate in Oklahoma. Governor Mary Fallin is accustomed to firsts. She first made history in when she was elected the first Republican and first woman to serve as Oklahoma’s Lieutenant Governor. She held that post until , when, rather than seeking re-election, she ran for the 5th Congressional District seat being vacated by Ernest Istook. Later that year she became the first woman elected to Congress from Oklahoma since Alice Mary Robertson in This past November, Oklahomans watched another first: two female candidates battling for the Governor’s office. On November 2, , Fallin defeated Democrat and incumbent Lieutenant Governor Jari Askins with 60 percent of the vote and became Oklahoma’s 27th and first female governor.

Born in Missouri, Fallin was raised in Tecumseh, a city of 6, situated approximately 40 miles southeast of Oklahoma City. One could say that politics run in her family, as both her mother and father served terms as mayors of the small town. Governor Mary Fallin is focused on creating Oklahoma jobs, reducing government waste and making state government work better for Oklahomans.
As the first female governor of Oklahoma, she is often called a “trailblazer.” What she’s more proud of, however, is helping to lead the Oklahoma Comeback.
In , Mary Fallin took office in the midst of a recession. Oklahoma’s unemployment rate had climbed to seven percent. The economy was stagnant. State government faced a budget shortfall of $ million and the Rainy Day Savings Account had only $ in it.
Governor Fallin got to work. To help create jobs and boost the economy, she partnered with conservative lawmakers to pass pro-business reforms like tax cuts, lawsuit reform and a complete overhaul of the state’s workers’ compensation system.
To eliminate government waste and help close the budget shortfall, she worked to consolidate or eliminate dozens of agencies, boards and commissions. She also prioritized spending needs, making tough budget cuts while still providing the necessary funding for priorities like education, public safety and health services.
