Chief Justice is the chief amongst the judges of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, and also head of the whole judicial establishments, including subordinate courts. The Chief Justice is appointed by the president. By convention, the senior most judge of the Appellate Division is appointed the Chief Justice. He sits in the Appellate Division with other judges to hear and decide cases. Chief Justice presides over full court meetings to transact business relating to the administration of the Supreme Court, and control discipline of the judges and magistrates of the subordinate courts. Most rules for regulating the practice and procedure of both the Appellate and High Court Divisions of the Supreme Court (including subordinate courts) including those specified in certain legislative Acts, such as the Companies Act and the Banking Companies Act , are also duly scrutinized and approved in full court meetings presided over by the Chief Justice. President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Saturday appointed Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed as the 25th chief justice of Bangladesh.
Bangabhaban sources confirmed the information.
The law ministry has issued a notification in this regard.
"The president has appointed Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, a judge of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of Bangladesh exercising the power bestowed upon him as per article 95 (1) of the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh," read the notification.
Syed Refaat Ahmed was born on December 28, His father, Barrister Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed, served as a former attorney general of Bangladesh. His mother, Dr Sufia Ahmed, was a national professor of Bangladesh and a prominent professor of Islamic History and Culture at the University of Dhaka.

Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed was born on December 28, His father Late Barrister Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed was a prominent jurist and an attorney general of Bangladesh. His mother Late National Professor Dr. Sufia Ahmed was the first female national professor, a language hero, Ekushey Padak recipient, and the chairperson of the Department of Islamic History and Culture at Dhaka University.
Justice Refaat Ahmed obtained LL.B. (Hons) (First Class, First in order of merit), from University of Dhaka, BA in Jurisprudence and MA from Wadham College, University of Oxford, UK, MA in Law and Diplomacy and Ph.D. from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, USA.
