Dickinson, now 59, actually wrote the manuscript in longhand, forgoing a ghostwriter. He's a gifted writer, quick with the turn of a phrase and bringing the reader along for the ride. Let me say from the outset that I'm not a huge Bruce Springsteen fan. My CD collection includes 8 Springsteen albums, and his "Born to Run" album is not one of them; my Spotify list has 50"liked" Springsteen songs and I have sixteen of Bruce's songs on my ITunes (yes, I still have that, too). FWIW, my favorite and most played is "Thunder Road."
But I came of age in the 70's, and so did Bruce Springsteen. I became aware of him in with the release of "The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle," his second album. It was his third record, "Born to Run," that propelled him to stardom and international fame. It was a damn good album that rocked! Springsteen's songs about working-class dreamers scrambling for a piece of the American dream were infused with soul, lyricism and had an energy that appealed to a wide swath of American youth. I come from a boardwalk town where almost everything is tinged with a bit of fraud. So am I. By twenty, no race-car-driving rebel, I was a guitar player on the streets of Asbury Park and already a member in good standing amongst those who “lie” in service of the truth . . . artists, with a small “a.” But I held four clean aces. I had youth, almost a decade of hard-core bar band experience, a good group of homegrown musicians who were attuned to my performance style and a story to tell.
This book is both a continuation of that story and a search into its origins. I’ve taken as my parameters the events in my life I believe shaped that story and my performance work. One of the questions I’m asked over and over again by fans on the street is “How do you do it?” In the following pages I will try to shed a little light on how and, more important, why.
