Joven Cuanang
Dr Joven Cuanang has been an art patron for decades and a neurologist for even longer. Somehow, though, he always felt split in half between the two. That is, until he chanced upon the research of Semir Zeiki, whose work reveals the effects of art on the brain through functional magnetic resonance imaging. His school, the Pinto Academy of Arts and Science, is also known as the Philippine Centre of Neuroaesthetics. The lecture hall, which focuses on art therapy, is located in the same property as the Pinto Art Museum, which he established after his advocacy for art, culture, and ecology post-People Power Revolution gave him the opportunity to “adopt” local talents in the communities of Antipolo. Now known as the Salingpusa Collective, their works of contemporary art have spilled over to a new generation of artists, borne from the patronage of the doctor.

Connecting to art through the heart
Over 30 years ago, a group of artists known as Salingpusa launched their careers with a series of shows on the grounds of what is now the Pintô Art Museum. The artworks were displayed casually, hanging on clotheslines, referred to fondly as “sampayan art.” Those artists are now some of the brightest lights in Philippine art.

House moves to recognize yr old neurologist

The House of Representatives has adopted on second reading a resolution seeking to recognize and honor the exemplary contributions of Dr. Joven R. Cuanang as a neurologist, art patron, and a humanitarian, on the occasion of his 80th birthday on December 31, , and his sixtieth year as a doctor.

House Bill No. , principally authored by Ilocos Sur Rep. Kristine Singson-Meehan was adopted as House Resolution No. 24, before Congress adjourned for a month-long Christmas break.
Singson-Meehan described Cuanang as "outstanding and exemplary Filipino” who has invaluable contribution to the country’s nation building.
“For more than 60 years, his unselfish devotion in the promotion of arts and culture has touched the lives of every Filipino, and it is only proper to honor him, his works, achievements and contributions, as he is truly an outstanding and exemplary Filipino who is an inspiration to everyone,” the two-page resolution said.

Pintô Art Museum is an exhibition space and contemporary museum located in the Philippines’ historic pilgrimage city of Antipolo outside of Manila. The museum was founded in to publicly exhibit the art collection of Filipino neurologist and patron of the arts, Dr. Joven Cuanang. The museum (pintô means door in Filipino) was founded on the principle that art plays a diplomatic role in bridging distinctive nationalities, worldviews, and communities.
Dr. Cuanang began collecting in the spirit of local artistic patronage in the late s when he championed a revolutionary Filipino artist collective, The Salingpusa, through dedicated connoisseurship and acquisitions. The political movements associated with the People Power Revolution in and the fall of the Marcos Regime ushered an era of creative expression and artistic exploration. Dr. Cuanang became a proponent for other practicing artists in the region and earned a reputation as a patron in the Filipino artistic community.
