Travelling to England
Henry arrived penniless in Liverpool, England in November to be greeted by the acclaim of the newspapers as his fame spread before him. He settled in Cheetham Hill, Manchester where a second edition of his book was published by Thomas G Lee, Minister of the New Windsor Chapel in Salford. There is a copy of this rare edition in the John Rylands Library in Manchester.
Henry, ever the showman, began touring his moving panorama around the north of England. In Bradford, in May he was packed into a wooden box like the one he had used to escape. In half an hour he was paraded through the streets of Leeds and placed on the stage of the Music Hall in Albion Street, where he escaped again and then showed 'Mirror of Slavery' to an audience who had never seen anything like this before.

Throughout the history of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, many enslaved Africans were forced to live their lives without ever experiencing freedom. However, the innate human desire for self-determination remained unyielding, leading many to seek freedom through the Underground Railroad and other daring methods. One of the most remarkable stories is that of Henry “Box” Brown, a man who managed to escape slavery by sealing himself inside a wooden crate and mailing himself to freedom.
Henry Brown was born a slave in Virginia, in the year His mother was a fervently religious woman, whose strong Christian faith greatly influenced the young Henry. As he grew to adulthood, Brown was hired out to work in a tobacco factory by his master, who he describes as one of the more decent slave owners in the American South at the time.
Later in life, Brown wrote about his years in slavery, revealing that his experience was not as brutal as what many of his contemporaries endured. He was whipped only once and was neither cruelly overworked nor forced to live in completely degrading conditions.

The story of Henry ‘Box’ Brown is one of courage and dedication. Although born a slave and given no opportunities, he had a level of common sense and conviction. His publication of his “Narrative of the Life of Henry Box Brown” combined with his speaking engagements led him to be an active member of the Anti-Slavery Society and a voice for freedom for Black American slaves.
- Born into slavery in Virginia, Henry Brown was taken from his mother and father when he was 15 years old and sole to a plantation owner. Brown worked on a plantation owned by the son of his old master in farming tobacco.
- In Brown had heard that there was some kind of excitement in the neighboring county. Not sure of what happened he asked and later learned that it was the Nat Turner Rebellion. He found out the details of a number of slaves uprising against their owners and that these slaves were caught, hung, whipped, and killed with swords in the streets. Any Black slave found away from their homes at night were shot. The uprising had scared the white owners and they would punish all slaves with hanging or worse.
