Born near Chester-le-Street, County Durham in , Chambers was an only child, and a poor scholar; considered "slow" by his teachers, he did not learn to read fluently until the age of nine. After two years in the Royal Navy as part of his National Service, Chambers trained as a teacher and taught for three years at Westcliff High School in Southend on Sea before joining an Anglican monastery in Stroud, Gloucestershire in He later used his experience as a monk in his novel Now I Know.
His first plays, including Johnny Salter (), The Car and The Chicken Run (), were published while he was a teacher in Stroud.
Chambers left the monastery in and a year later became a freelance writer. The archive of the British author, educationalist, critic, and champion of children’s literature Aidan Chambers and his wife, Nancy, the publisher of Signal and Thimble Press, is a treasure trove for researchers. A constant reader, Aidan Chambers was for eleven years during the s and 60s a teacher of English and drama in secondary schools, seven of them as a modern-style monk. In he became a freelance author of fiction and a writer about and speaker on reading and literature.
In recent years he has lectured in Sweden, Holland, Italy, Canada and Belgium, where in March he delivered a keynote speech at a European Union Conference on Cultural Education, Innovation, Creativity and Youth, organised by the Flemish Ministry of Education. He has an honorary PhD from the University of Ume&#;, Sweden, and a Doctorate of Letters from the University of Gloucestershire, UK. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
He lives with his wife, Nancy, in a village in Gloucestershire.
