Mansukh bhai Prajapati, a traditional clay craftsmen, has transformed traditional clay items into an innovative range of products which he calls Mitticool, ‘mitti’ meaning clay in Hindi. The Better India sheds lights on the entrepreneurial journey of this tenacious innovator.

&#;I was exposed to clay in childhood because it was my family&#;s traditional profession. We used to live in a village near Morbi district in Gujaratand my elders were involved in this work. Pottery used to be an extremely tedious task and they used to work all day. The pollution caused due to this work led to many health problems among potters. The smokeand dust would reach the lungs, causing breathing issues. My grandfather and his brothers couldn&#;t live longer than 50 years due to this. Secondly, nobody was ready to marry off their daughter to a potter. The journey of Mansukhbhai Prajapati begins on 19th October, Born to a poor potter, his family had already quit their business due to the breakdown of the Machhu dam and thereafter migrated to Morbi. In he failed in 10th standard and dropped out of school after that.
Mansukhbhai Prajapati, a traditional clay craftsman, has developed an entire range of earthen products for daily use in the kitchen. These products include water filters, refrigerators, hot plates, cooker and other such items of daily use.
Whenever his in-laws stepped on to the highway, Manshuk Lal Prajapati would crouch behind his tea- stall to hide. Prajapati, 48, was a defeated man. He had failed in his tenth boards, worked as a laborer and was now trying to eek out a living as a tea vendor in Wankaner, a small dusty town in Gujarat.
But a wave of humiliation swept over him whenever his in-laws saw him peddling tea on the roadside. &#;My in-laws were much better off. They were in the toy making business and here I was selling tea. I felt very ashamed,&#; he says.
It was this feeling of shame that drove him to become an extraordinary entrepreneur he is today. Prajapati is an innovator who is in the business of making everyday household appliances, including refrigerators, pressure cookers, non-stick pans, and water dispensers &#; all out of clay.
