A fundamental flaw in this rant is the assumption that Jackie Evancho ever was, is or claims to be an opera singer. That label was incessantly attached to her by TV news and entertainment reporters. But she herself, even before the end of her America's Got Talent run, repeatedly corrected interviewers, claiming instead to be a 'classical crossover' singer. Still the media wouldn't let go of the attractive myth. That is not Miss Evancho's fault.
Say what you will about the nebulously defined CC genre, but it is decidedly not opera. Evancho's instrument took on the ability to sound more mature, and unfortunately, early vocal coaches and a certain producer pushed her into a repertoire that highlighted that.
The good news is that her parents (who by all credible evidence are truly looking after her voice, and her, to ensure as normal a childhood as possible) applied the breaks and distanced themselves from the freak show. No more Nessun Dorma (which she only performed five times in public), and no more 'operatic affect.'
Her second album, a collection of easy listening songs from movies, disappointed many of her

Well, Foxy was looking for something different to discuss a while ago and I don't think we have ever talked about an opera singer on OLO.
Firstly , I am an old bluegrass and country rock fan but I think Amira is the very best. Her voice blows me away and leaves me teary, and her range is incredible. There are a few young females around now that sing classics but in my opinion they do not match Amira. I know nothing about opera, but play her songs several times a day.
Amira won the Hollands Got Talent series at age 9 singing three classics. She is self taught by using youtube and no formal training. Her parents are amateur musicians. She now receives tuition, mostly aimed at her breathing.
Shortly after her win on HGT Andre Rieu invited her to perform at his concert. How good is she to be asked to perform her very first concert performance by Anddre Rieu in front of an audience of Amira got a standing ovation. Andre is no amateur at the local club.

The New Jackie Evancho: Amira Willighagen Sings 'Ave Maria,' Advances to Finals of 'Holland's Got Talent'
Nine-year-old singer Amira Willighagen gave a beautiful performance of Ave Maria on the semi-finals of Holland's Got Talent last night, even though she was suffering from a bad cold in the days leading up to the event. Her performance impressed the judges and won her a place in the finals of the talent show, to be held next week.
Amira was dressed in a sparkling white satin dress, with a garland of white flowers in her hair. Holding her hands as if praying, and surrounded by beams of white light, she looked positively angelic as she sang.
Amira's many supporters in the audience held signs emblazoned with her name. The judges appeared to be thrilled with her performance, and Juror Gordon even stood on his desk to applaud her.
Her brother Vincent presented Amira with a bouquet of red roses after her performance.
When Amira auditioned for Holland's Got Talent back in October, she sang Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro." The video of her audition has been viewed by more than 12 million people on YouTube, making it the sixth most watched video of

The God-Child Myth: Are Child Singers Jackie Evancho, Amira Willighagen, Angelina Jordan Astar, Etc. Actually Talented?
The appeal and draw that lies in young talent far exceeds actual understanding. It just seems to be interesting to most folks, and the way that the internet trends these days makes way for these prodigies to become but a blip on your computer screen.
Beyond our ability to hear such wunderkinds live and in person, lies the obsession that viewers have, especially in classical circles, with youthful genius.
In short, what does virtuosity mean in the young? Moreover, is that notion alone justification for arbitrary acceptance, unhinged from looking at the performance objectively and placing it, fairly, in line with others--even though they are much older?
Bottom line: Is it acceptable to say that some of these child phenoms just don't have it?
Jascha Heifetz, Yehudi Menuhin, Arthur Rubinstein and Daniel Barenboim gave their debut recitals at tender ages, none exempt from serious accolades and long-term, fruitful musical careers.
