Craighead House

Welcome to Craighead House, Home of the Craighead Naturalists

Craighead House is historic for its architecture, but more so for what happened within its walls and on its landscape. This late-Victorian home near Boiling Springs, PA, is where Frank Craighead, “Scholar of the Everglades,” was born and raised. His daughter, Jean Craighead George, Newbery Award-winning author of children’s books about nature, began her prolific writing career here.

Jean’s twin brothers, John and Frank Jr., developed their interest in nature and pioneered falconry as a sport in the United States during their summers at the house by the Yellow Breeches Creek. “The Twins” were significant contributors to National Geographic Magazine and other publications. Their groundbreaking research helped save the grizzly bears in Yellowstone Park. And they were instrumental in drafting federal legislation to protect the character and value of free-flowing rivers and streams (Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of ).

In , Craighead consisted of a deteriorating structure beside a trout stream. Today, it stands for a legacy built on a unique family’s love of nature. Many generous friends a

The House

Craighead House is a unique late-Victorian home near Boiling Springs, PA where Frank Craighead, “Scholar of the Everglades,” was born and raised. His daughter, Jean Craighead George, began her writing career at Craighead House. Jean was a Newbery Award-winning author of children’s books about nature, and went on to write over books for children and young adults including My Side of the Mountain, Julie of the Wolves, and The Summer of the Falcon.  Jean’s twin brothers, John and Frank Jr., developed their interest in nature and pioneered falconry as a sport in the United States during their summers at the house.

Knowledge of, and respect for, nature in Ms. George’s writing were also central themes in the work of her brothers, who were significant contributors to National Geographic magazine and other publications. The twins are credited with saving the Grizzly bears in Yellowstone Park through their research studies, and are also the authors of the federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Act ().

Craighead House

The significance of Craighead House (built ) is its association with the Craighead family of scientists, conservationists and authors who lived there. The house’s setting on Yellow Breeches Creek was the inspiration and launching point for their lifelong study of the natural world.

Craighead was the childhood home of brothers Eugene and Frank Craighead, who were nationally-recognized entomologists and authors. Frank’s twin sons, Frank Jr. and John, (born ) began careers as naturalists at Craighead House by training hunting falcons during their summers. Adventures with Birds of Prey () was the first of their many National Geographic articles. Their pioneering research on Grizzly bears in the s is credited with saving the bears from extinction in Yellowstone Park. The brothers were among the most significant figures in 20th century conservation (Audubon Society) and two of the 13 most important naturalists of the century (National Geographic Society).

The twins’ sister Jean (born ) began her writing career at Craighead. Jean Craighead George wrote and illustrated more than books on nature. Summer of the Falcon recalls her experience training a

&#;My Side of the Mountain has always been one of my favorite books. What inspired you to write it?

Let me tell you why I wrote My Side of the Mountain. When I was a kid, my father, who was an entomologist and ecologist, took my brothers and me into the wilderness along the Potomac River near Washington, D. C., our home. He taught us the plants and animals, where to find wild asparagus and other edible plants. We made lean-tos to sleep in, fished with our own homemade fish hooks and basswood fiber lines and trained falcons. My brothers were two of the first falconers in the United States and gave me a falcon to train when I was thirteen. It was a glorious childhood.

When I became a writer I wanted to tell about those wonderful days. I wrote eight books before I saw a way to get Sam out in the wilderness without the park rangers or his family coming to get him. He would tell his Dad he was going to go to the family farm in the Catskill Mountains. Then I put myself in Sam's head and began to write using my own adventures, including eating all those delicious foods .

I have written the sequel, On The Far Side of the Mountain. When I started it my dau
