Biographies of Dietrich Bonhoeffer: An Ongoing Review and Guide
There is an ever-growing collection of biographies of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German pastor who was executed by the Nazis in This means that when people are looking to learn about Bonhoeffer, it can be difficult to know where to dive in. While I believe there&#;s no single strong answer to that question, I do think different biographies do different things well. This post will be a catch-all specifically for biographies about Bonhoeffer. I&#;ll highlight strengths and weaknesses of each one, in the hopes that this will let readers best choose from among the growing field of Bonhoeffer studies. This post will continue to be updated as I encounter additional biographies, and may be expanded to include related works.
Why am I qualified to do this post? I am not a Bonhoeffer scholar by any traditional means, and I think it is incredibly important to read those scholars. That said, I have read over books by or about Bonhoeffer, his life, and his theology. By no means does this make me an expert, but I think I could at least offer some insights into questions about what biography to read.

Born into a prosperous German family, Bonhoeffer decided he would be a theologian at a young age and gained a sterling academic reputation in his early twenties. Overseas experiences made Bonhoeffer’s faith more than just intellectual and convinced him to fight against corrupt governments and inequality. When the Nazi regime took over Germany, Bonhoeffer joined church leaders who refused to follow the government’s censorship and anti-Semitic policies. During World War II, Bonhoeffer was actively involved in underground church operations to provide solid teaching and German resistance work to undermine the Nazis. Due to his opposition to the Nazi regime, Bonhoeffer was arrested and executed at the Flossian concentration camp, during the last month of the war. He remains an important symbol of opposition to Hitler, and his views on Christianity increasingly influential. Bonhoeffer was born in Breslau, Germany, in His family were not religious but had a strong musical and artistic heritage.
