Vancouver, B.C. – January 29th, – Westhaven Gold Corp. (TSX-V:WHN) is pleased to announce the appointment of Eira Thomas as Chairperson and Director effective January 24, Eira succeeds D. Grenville (Gren) Thomas, who is retiring after 13 years with the Company, though he will remain as an advisor.

The discovery of Canada’s newest diamond district bubbled up in the foam of one of those ‘beery’ sessions geologists are prone to now and then.
&#;The concept (of a new diamond region) developed over some beers, but it took years to bring it to fruition,&#; recalls Robin Hopkins, now the Vice-president of Exploration for Stornoway Diamonds Inc. And typical of the way things work in the junior exploration arena, it also needed a complex string of corporate swaps and deals to prove it real.

This is a story about Eira Thomas, dubbed the “Queen of Diamonds” for her role leading the geologists who discovered the kimberlite pipes that became the Diavik diamond mine. Diavik, Canada’s second diamond mine, produced million carats of the sparkling stones in the fourth quarter of , up 19% from a year earlier.

Eira, the daughter of Welsh immigrant and Aber Resources founder David Grenville “Gren” Thomas, followed in her father’s footsteps both figuratively and literally. A geologist before she became an executive, Eira cut quite a figure in a mining industry dominated by men. The mud on her boots came before the earrings adorned with diamonds mined from the deposit she discovered.
Later came the falling-out at Aber Resources, the cofounding of her own diamond exploration company, an audacious takeover of a Quebec diamond project – where our paths crossed – and a return to the diamond exploration game.
But first, a bit of background.

Geologists around the world are lucky if they ever see one of their discoveries turn into an active mine. Still in her forties, Eira Thomas—nicknamed Canada’s Queen of Diamonds—has “hit pay dirt”, as prospectors say, four times in her career. Thomas’s most famous discovery was one she worked on with her father, Grenville Thomas. She was only 21, fresh out of university with a degree in geology, when her father called while she was travelling in South Africa. “I was like, ‘Diamonds in Northern Canada, Dad, really?’” she recalls. Returning to Canada in late , she immediately began prospecting a massive region north of Yellowknife that would become, when she was 25, the Diavik Diamond Mine, one of the world’s richest diamond mines by grade, even supplying a few stones to Harry Winston.
A string of successes unprecedented for a female exploration geologist followed. She left the company that owns Diavik and then co-founded Stornoway Diamond Corporation; before leaving that company in , she put together a deal that will open Quebec’s first diamond mine.
