Born in Lowestoft, England, John grew up on the beaches of Pakefield, Southwold and Walberswick. After studying architecture in Brighton, he worked with exhibition design and illustration for many years before relocating to Sweden with his young family in Design work soon gave way to an overwhelming desire to express himself through paint. So the journey began.
John evolved a style of working in which colour and composition take centre stage, with less regard for perspective and other such formal rules. In his still life work, John tries to tease something extraordinary from his everyday surroundings. His coastal works often refer to his beloved Suffolk, but after over twenty years in Sweden, influences from further afield can creep in.
John paints with acrylics, which he lays on with vigour. After creating an initial abstract composition of shapes and splashes, some semblance of reality normally finds its way in: a mug, a vase, a boat, a jetty… More often than not, he works on hard panels such as plywood or hardboard, which enable him to scratch and distress the surface. Who was John Button?
John Button was an American artist, well known for his city-scapes. Educated at the University of California, Berkeley then moved to New York City in the early s. He became friends with Fairfield Porter and Frank O'Hara and assumed his part in the New York School of Painters and Poets.
Amidst the frenzy of Abstract Expressionism, Button remained true to his interest in realism, and is now most commonly associated with such New York School artists as Fairfield Porter, Jane Freilicher, and Alex Katz. John Button was a fine draftsman and drew from life models throughout his career. However, little known are his sketches of male nudes – studio models from the School of Visual Arts, where Button taught, as well as personal acquaintances.

About John
Born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, John grew up on England’s east coast. He studied Architecture in Brighton and worked for many years with exhibition design, interiorsand illustration. After moving to Sweden with his young family, John began painting and exhibiting more actively. More recently he’s expanded his gallery representation beyond Sweden to throughout the U.K and to the U.S.A.
In his paintings, he explores landscape and seascape through its patterns and textures, attempting to trigger a memory or a sense of place and ignoring conventional rules of perspective along the way. In his still-life studies, John tries to tease something extraordinary out of his everyday surroundings. Inspiration for John lies all around, from an un-cleared breakfast table to an upturned boat on ashingle beach or the childhood memory of a family walk.
