The middle period of the Haitian Revolution is the story of Leger Felicite Sonthonax, French Commissioner to Saint-Domingue, and the rise of Toussaint Louverture.

Sonthonax worked tirelessly to save the colony for France. Toussaint worked tirelessly to free the slaves. Each was jealous of his power. It was inevitable that they would be in conflict, and Toussaint ultimately won this confrontation, shipping Sonthonax back to France. However, before he left Sonthonax assured his position in Haitian history by abolishing slavery from Saint-Domingue. Toussaint, after initially fighting against the French and for the Spanish, came back over to the French defeating not on the Spanish, but also driving the British out of Saint-Domingue.

The French, fearing Toussaint's growing power and suspecting that he had sentiments toward independence, sent special agent Thomas Hedouville to save the colony for France. douville managed to hammer home the fatal wedge between Toussaint and mulatto general, Andre Rigaud. Léger Félicité Sonthonax (b. 17 March ; d. 28 July ), French politician and lawyer. Sonthonax, a native of Oyonnax, France, was a controversial figure whose actions led to profoundly important but unintended results. Appointed commissioner of Saint-Domingue by Louis XVI in June , with the mandate to halt revolutionary activity in the French colony, he implemented the decree that gave civil rights to coloreds (persons of mixed black and white heritage) and outlawed slavery. The decree had been designed to quell the frustration of blacks and win their support against the British. Instead, revolutionary momentum continued to increase. In irate white landowners and the revolutionary leader Toussaint L'ouverture forced Sonthonax out of Saint-Domingue and into the hands of the British. He returned to France but two years later was sent back to Haiti, where he undertook an unsuccessful campaign to eradicate voodoo (vodun) culture. Sonthonax retired to France in and died at Oyonnax.

Leger Felicite Sonthonax, son of a prosperous French merchant, was a born-again Revolutionary. He rose in the ranks during the French Revolution and in was sent to Saint Domingue as part of the Second Civil Commission. This was a group of three men sent to oversee the interests of France in Saint Domingue. Sonthonax conceived the mission of the Commission as having two primary aims:

  • enforce the new French law of April 4, which gave full rights of French citizenship to free men of color
  • save Saint Domingue for France.

These were two extraordinarily difficult tasks. The slaves had just revolted in the north and held most of the plain. It was feared that they would move toward independence. The whites of Saint Domingue were strongly resisting giving any rights to free men of color, and there was a great deal of discussion among the whites of declaring independence for France. Thus the problem was to return the slaves to the plantations and to save Saint Domingue for France.
