When Louisa McElwain isn’t painting, chances are she’s tackling the chores endemic to her farm north of Santa Fe near Española, where she raises horses and cattle and keeps fruit and vegetable gardens. On the grounds is a studio, mainly for the contemplation and storage of finished works, all of which have been painted outdoors. She’s had numerous solo exhibitions and is represented by seven galleries in five different Western states. For a list of those galleries, visit her website at

17 Mar Perspective: Louisa McElwain [–]
It was the day of Louisa McElwain’s annual studio tour. Organized each summer by Evoke Contemporary, the event would see invited collectors and friends gather for a barbecue, painting demonstration, and tour of the artist’s studio and small ranch just north of Santa Fe. The gallery’s director, Kathrine Erickson, arrived early that day to help prepare.
As the time for folks to arrive grew closer, Erickson noticed that the field where cars were to park was thick with tall hay. She asked how the cars would park there. “Oh, I’m going to cut the field,” McElwain replied. She climbed on a tractor to mow the pasture, but it broke down in the driveway. An increasingly anxious Erickson asked what they would do, and McElwain produced a giant wrench and repaired the tractor. Then, 15 minutes before guests began to arrive, McElwain announced she was going inside to take a bath.
“That’s how it rolled with her,” Erickson says, laughing.

Louisa McElwain
Louisa McElwain was born in in Nashua, New Hampshire. She studied in Europe with master portrait artist Nera Simi, before spending three months at the Skowhegan School in Maine, where she developed a passion for landscape painting. McElwain went on to earn her undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania. During that time, she was introduced to the ideas of famed color theorist Joseph Albers, who believed that color is always seen in relation to the colors around it. McElwain would take this principle and apply it to her own work throughout her career.
In , McElwain moved to New Mexico. Deeply fascinated by the ever-changing climate of the Southwest, she immersed herself in nature and incorporated the region’s powerful elements into her paintings. Before a storm, McElwain was known to pack up her pick-up truck with her painting materials and set out to find the best spot for what she liked to call a “dialogue with nature.” She would create a makeshift armature mounted on the back of her truck, staple a large canvas to it, and then simply paint what she saw.
