How To Get A Good White Dress Shirt

Joel writes to ask: I finally got around to buying a suit. I currently have two white dress shirts (a thick oxford and a cotton-linen blend with a somewhat small collar). I&#;m trying to decide if I need another, more standard white dress shirt to use for formal events. What makes a good all-around white shirt to use with a suit? Are there differences in cloth, texture, and sheen? Do you need different types of white dress shirts for different occasions?

A proper white dress shirt is one of the few things that ought to be in everyone&#;s closet. If only because, at some point, everyone needs to wear a serious suit for serious occasions. Which means they also need all of the accouterments — a pair of dress shoes, a dark tie, and of course a white shirt.

Tailored clothing is mostly about learning a kind of visual language. Generally speaking, in classic men&#;s style, formality starts with black tie (if you want to be technical, white tie is more formal, but in today&#;s age, it&#;s all but disappeared). This history is why single-breasted coats are more formal than double-breasted, peak lapels are more formal than notch lapels, jetted p

While I&#;ve been told I&#;m conservative in my dress, I certainly don&#;t consider myself orthodox. I&#;ve got darted suits with pleated pants (from J. Press). And this depravity will almost certainly ignite the torches among the trad inquisitors: I&#;ve been known to wear blue oxford-cloth buttondowns with contrasting white collars. I make no apologies, as they add a pinch of Edwardian dandyism to otherwise stolid outfits.

The opportunity to add to my limited contrast-collar OCBD collection presented itself when Ivy Style connected with Michael Spencer, a new shirt company offering oxford-cloth shirts in many different manifestations, including tab, club, point and buttondown collars.

I&#;d read an introduction to the company on the blog Put This On, which brought up the point that there are an awful lot of custom shirtmakers on the web. Skepticism being the order of the day, I nevertheless reached out to the company to see if it had any relevance to us here. Turned out a lot of what I found sounds like something that could have come from a non-millennial fogey in our very own comments section.

Michael Bennett, the brand&#;s founder, grew up wearing traditional menswear.

Review: Michael Spencer Custom Dress Shirts

The Peak Lapel

Disclaimer: Michael Spencer was kind enough to send The Peak Lapel this shirt for free for the purpose of this review.

There sure do seem to be a whole lot of online companies doing made-to-measure shirting these days. And that’s a good thing, through and through. So, no complaints here. But it also is difficult to navigate at times, with it being unclear what separates one company from another, and where true value actually lies. And then there is Michael Spencer. They’ve been around for over 60 years. They are made entirely in America. And their focus is entirely on quality and tradition.

For starters, their prices are in the upper realm of most other shirt companies. Meaning, most of Michael Spencer’s shirts will run you about $ - $, give or take. While many online MTM companies have plenty of offerings in this price tier, they also usually have options starting at lower price points. Not Michael Spencer. Though, again, this is by design. Their fabrics are all super premium, and high quality. They’re simply not in the business of selling you a $60 MTM shirt. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s n

Yesterday as part of my pandemic-era ritual of wearing my Sunday best, I wore a fine custom shirt made by colleague Spencer Bennett as a tribute to the gentleman.

Last week Bennett&#;s son informed Ivy Style of his passing, and issued this statement:

On April 20, Spencer Bennett, co-founder of Michael-Spencer Shirts, passed away after a short bout with pancreatic cancer. Spencer loved few things in life more than his family, America, and a good shirt. In , Spencer merged these interests together when he and his wife Ivonne started Michael-Spencer (the name being an amalgam of his sons&#; middle names).

When launching the company, Spencer was asked what he would do if no one bought any shirts. To which he responded &#;then I&#;ll have a closet full of great shirts.&#; Fortunately, that wasn&#;t the case, as word of the company quickly spread. Spencer took pride in making the kind of shirt his customers sought after. And he found great joy in the personal relationships he developed with many of his customers.

The company is ceasing operations, and our condolences go out to Spencer Bennett&#;s family. May he rest in peace. — CC
