She received an extraordinary and very wide education, against the opposition of her mother, at a time when there were very few boys’ schools, and practically none for girls. Her tutor was her brother and godfather Louis, eleven years her senior, who was a seminarian, later a priest.
Aged sixteen, her brother took her with him to Paris to complete her education. Four years later he introduced her to Joseph Varin, a member of a group, including Louis, of “underground” Jesuits (since Jesuits had been expelled from Europe, including from Malta).
Joseph Varin had the task of finding a group of women to found a new congregation for the education of girls, in parallel with the Jesuit schools for boys.

Born in France on the eve of the Revolution, Sophie Barat was caught up in the movement to restore and recreate society devastated by violence and war. She founded the Society of the Sacred Heart in and this community of women developed an educational project which was rooted in France and soon spread throughout Europe and the Americas. Sophie Barat led this rapidly expanding congregation of women for sixty-three years. Several times her leadership was queried and challenged both within and without the Society and only in was it finally accepted without question. In Paris, on November 21, , at the age of twenty, she and three other young women consecrated themselves to &#;make known the revelation of God&#;s love.&#; Centered in personal and communal prayer, they set out to give young women a classical education -- not common in their day -- and to offer religious studies and practical skills. Madeleine-Sophie Barat was born in France in in the little Burgundian town of Joigny. She went to Paris in , at the height of the French Revolution, and initially considered becoming a Carmelite. However, her experience of Revolutionary violence in Joigny and Paris led her on another path. In she founded the Society of the Sacred Heart whose purpose was to make known the love of God revealed in the Heart of Christ, and take part in the restoration of Christian life in France through the education of young women of the rich and the poor classes.
The Society of the Sacred Heart quickly expanded within Europe and beyond. At the same time Sophie Barat also grew, transformed by her experience as leader and friend to so many women who joined her. She learnt to face the impact of Jansenism within herself, her family, (and especially in her brother Louis Barat, who became a Jesuit), and within the Church.
