George Enescu - biography and work

Considered to be a wonder-child, little Jurjac (the pet-name given by his family and the close ones), as early as the age of five, dreamt to be a composer: “It’s odd though: I never knew anything, I never listened to anything or to very little, I never had anyone near me who could influence me.  And still, as a child, I had a definite idea about being a composer. Just a composer“, George Enescu said later to Bernard Gavoty, a music critic and a radio journalist.

At the age of 3, he had one of those decisive musical experiences when he heard, by accident and for the first time, some fiddlers playing near to his native village. Impressed by what he heard, the child tried to imitate the instruments of the folk music band the very next day: the violin was a “thread sewn on a piece of wood” (G. Enescu in B. Gavoty, George Enescu´s Memoires), the cembalo was a couple of wooden sticks, and he imitated the reed pipe by blowing through his lips.

Biography of George Enescu

George Enescu was a Romanian composer, violinist, conductor, and educator, widely regarded as one of the greatest musicians of the first half of the 20th century. He began composing music at the age of five and was sent to the Vienna Conservatory at the age of seven, where he graduated with a silver medal. He performed concerts in Vienna and in , he moved to Paris to study with composers such as Jules Massenet, Martin Marsick, and Gabriel Fauré, alongside fellow student Guy Ropartz.

Early Career

In , Enescu made his conducting debut in New York and during the s and s, he lived in Bucharest and Paris. After , he settled permanently in Paris but continued to actively perform as a violinist and conductor in Europe and the United States. He gave concerts in Moscow in , , and In , Enescu was elected a full member of the Romanian Academy. A început să cânte la vioară la vârsta de 4 ani, primind îndrumări muzicale de la părinţii săi şi de la un vestit lăutar, Niculae Chioru. De la vârsta de ani datează primele sale încercări de compoziţie. Studiul profesionist al muzicii i s-a datorat, pentru început, profesorului Eduard Caudella.
