John Gruen was born Jonas Grunberg in Enghien-les-Bains, France on September 12, The family moved to Berlin in The Grunbergs, who were Jewish, resettled in Milan in because of the rise to power of Adolf Hitler. In , fleeing Benito Mussolini, he and his parents went to New York. He received bachelor's and master's degrees in art history from the University of Iowa. He was a composer of art songs that were performed by Eleanor Steber and Patricia Neway. In , New Songs, a recording of his work, became the first album released by Elektra Records. He became a critic for The New York Herald Tribune and New York magazine. He wrote about music, art, dance, and theater. His work also appeared in The New York Times, Dance Magazine, ARTnews, and Architectural Digest. He was a photographer whose work is in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art. He wrote more than ten books during his lifetime including The New Bohemia, The World's Great Ballets, and The Sixties: Young in the Hamptons. Between and , Keith Haring established himself as an art world celebrity and pop culture icon with a distinctive and instantly recognizable style that came to define the decade. Art is for everyone, he said, and matched his critical and commercial success with a mission to make his work as accessible as possible.
Born on May 4, , in Reading, Pennsylvania and raised in nearby Kutztown, Haring developed a strong interest in drawing from a very young age. He was influenced by Disney, the Peanuts, Dr. Seuss and his father Allen, a keen amateur cartoonist. A conventional middle-class childhood was followed by a teenage curiosity that drew him first to religion, and then the counter-culture. He joined the evangelical Jesus Movement but gave that up for drugs and the Grateful Dead, hitchhiking across America, making and selling T-shirts on the way. I became familiar with Keith Haring’s artwork while doing the AIDS walk in Boston with my friend, Mark, and a few of our close friends. Though it wasn’t the height of the AIDS epidemic, there were still an alarming number of deaths. Mark wanted to walk to honor the memory of his former partner, who died two years before. Our little group did three more walks together before Mark died of AIDS in
Keith Haring’s Ignorance=Fear, Silence=Death was one of his well-known artworks that raised AIDS awareness during a time when people had little knowledge and a lot of fear. People who had the disease kept silent for fear of stigmatization. I saw it on t-shirts, buttons, and posters. It was bright and colorful, with three yellow figures against an orange background. Each figure has eyes covered, ears covered, and mouth covered, and each has a pink “x” across their chest, representing the disease.
While I was aware of Keith’s death at 31 in , I knew very little about his short life.

Keith Haring moved to New York City in and began using the city as his canvas, making chalk drawings in subway stations. Early Life
Haring was born on May 4, , in Reading, Pennsylvania. His parents, Allen and Joan Haring, raised Haring and his three sisters in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. As a child, Haring was fascinated by the cartoon art of Walt Disney and Charles Schultz and the illustrations of Dr. Seuss. He spent many hours drawing with his father, an engineer whose hobby was cartooning. After graduating from high school in , Haring briefly attended the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh, dropping out after two semesters. In , he decided to return to school, moving to New York City to enroll at the School of Visual Arts.
