Tasneem Zakaria Mehta is an art historian, curator, designer, conservationist, and cultural activist. She is the Managing Trustee and Director of Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai and former Vice Chairman and Mumbai Convenor of INTACH. She has successfully pioneered the revival and restoration of several cultural sites in Mumbai. She conceptualized, curated, designed and implemented the restoration and revitalization of the Museum, which won UNESCO’s Asia Pacific Award of Excellence for Cultural Restoration. She has written and edited several articles and books on art and culture. Her latest book – ‘Mumbai- A City Through Objects’, stories from the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum&#; was co-published by Harper Design and released in May to mark the Museum’s th Anniversary, has won several awards including Art Book of the Year.

Tasneem Zakaria Mehta, the lady who transformed Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum into a thriving venue for arts
Tasneem Zakaria Mehta is synonymous with the year-old Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum (BDL). Other monikers for the museum's managing trustee and honorary director, by those who've worked with her are 'iron lady' and 'taskmaster'.
However, Mumbai's only city museum to win the UNESCO Asia Pacific Award of Excellence, one of her many accolades, is evidence that the year-old gets things done. Even if she invites controversies, of which there've been no dearth. She recently came under fire by the civic body when corporators alleged that Mehta planned to convert the existing playground into a parking lot as part of the museum's expansion plan. They've also contended in the past that she hasn't presented museum audits since , has perhaps siphoned funds, and that hosting the Lakme Fashion Show inside the museum is against 'Indian culture' and that she should instead promote skits, lavani, koli and other folk dances.

Every artefact on display is hand-picked and gives the 19th-century museum a new face. It merged the past with the present, the colonial with the contemporary. “We want to showcase contemporary culture the way the museum did earlier,” says Mehta, the managing trustee and honorary director of the museum, who reopened it after extensive research and renovation in The project was a public-private venture funded by the Ermenegildo Zegna Group. Soon, artists were invited to showcase their works. Sudarshan Shetty erected his own life-size statue next to the marble statue of Prince Albert and Jitish Kallat presented the city as an unfinished national project with makeshift scaffolding and rioting figures. “It’s about creating a dialogue between the museum and the city,” says Mehta, a JJ School of Art graduate.
