Getting to know Wandile from Generations: The Legacy &#; Zimbabwean born actress Chiedza Mhende captured the hearts of many South Africans for her male role as Wandile Radebe in the South African soapie opera, Generations: The Legacy.

Many South Africans didn&#;t know that Chiedza Mhende (full name Charlene Chiedza Kudzai Mhende) is a woman in real life. Chiedza executed her male role character Wandile brilliantly. The actress revealed that she was using the role as a mouthpiece for the LGBTI community.

Generations' Wandile on transgender role: It was a dream come true
Actress Chi Mhende has captured the hearts of South Africans with her role as male bachelor Wandile Radebe on Generations: The Legacy. The star revealed that she's using the role as a mouthpiece for the LGBTI community.
Speaking to Anele Mdoda on Real Talk with Anele recently, Chi said that despite the difficulties of playing a character going through a gender transition, she was honoured to play the role of Wandile.
"This was my calling. I am supposed to be performing and telling this story. I love playing roles beyond myself so this was a dream come true. I had so much fun playing a boy," she said.
She said that transforming herself into a boy on screen took about an hour each day of preparation, including voice practice and dressing in baggy clothes to try and get into character.
"The first director that I ever worked with said that it (getting into character) starts in the shoes. That is why I made the request (to wear men's shoes while rehearsing). Because once you feel the shoes the character is standing on, you feel the character," she added.

Chi Mhende is a Zimbabwean born performer and voice over artist.
She has worked extensively in the theatre performing leading roles, in both Shakespearean and Original works, on renowned Joburg and Cape Town stages. She has a background in Art Therapy having worked as a drama practitioner for the Zakheni Arts Foundation and as an Improv artist with the Bonfire Theatre Company. Woven into this freelancer’s game are appearances on international television shows namely; Mad Dogs, Homeland and Dominion.
In Chi received the Best Actress Award at the Durban International Film Festival for her lead role in the feature film Love The One You Love, directed by Jenna Bass. This role also led to an African Movie Academy Award nomination for Promising Young Artist.
In July , Chi accepted the role of Wandile Radebe on SABC 1’s Generations: The Legacy, a role that came with much controversy and chatter, questioning the producers’ casting of a female performer in a male role.
