Marie Guyart was born in France in Tours on 28 October , the daughter of Florent Guyart a master baker, and his wife Jeanne Michelet. They were devout Catholics and Marie had a sheltered upbringing, feeling herself close to God and wanting to give her life to Him.
When she was 18 however her parents arranged for her to marry Claude Martin, a master silk worker. A son, Claude, was born to them. Sadly her husband died in when Marie was just twenty. For the next twelve years Marie worked in the family business.
Ursuline Sister
Marie never relinquished her life of prayer and felt God’s call so strongly that at the age of 32 she became an Ursuline sister in the convent at Tours. There she lived a community life of prayer and good works, teaching in the school and assisting all who came to her for help.
When she looked back on her life from earliest childhood, Marie Guyart recognized, “God never led me by a spirit of fear, but by love and trust.” She found that from her earliest days she had a tendency to respond to the good and an ardent desire to respond to God’s love and make him known.
Even as a young girl she was compassionate toward the poor and wanted to give away everything she had. “I cannot say how much I loved them. I felt a deep resentment toward those who refused to be charitable.” It was said of her that she had been born to be charitable.
Almost all her life, she was busy with multiple tasks. She lived her relationship with God in activity. She wrote, “Those worries never diverted my attention from God who was my constant preoccupation. On the contrary, I was strengthened because everything I did was in a spirit of charity and not for my personal profit.”
It can be said that she responded to the invitation of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit to share their inner life. Marie Guyart de l’Incarnation is born on October 28th, , in the French city of Tours. She founded the Monastery of the Ursulines of Québec and also the first school for young girls in North America. Around the age of 15, although attracted by religious life, her parents wanted her to get properly married. That is why, at the age of 17, she married Claude Martin, a silk maker. In , she gives birth to her first and only child, Claude, but becomes a widow, a few months later.
Marie inherits a bankrupt family business. A shrewd businesswoman, at the early age of 19, she is able to get rid of all the debts very quickly. In , she starts working for her brother-in-law who owns a flourishing transportation company. All through these years, she has intense spiritual experiences allowing her to enjoy a great intimacy with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. None of her relatives were aware of this extraordinary communication. In her daily activities, she is sensitive to the continual presence of God who guides and sustains her.

At age 7, Marie had a dream in which she saw the heavens open and Jesus come to her and embrace her. “Will you be mine?” He said to her. “Yes!” answered the child. A question and an answer which, even at this tender age, revealed to Marie the path she would perseveringly follow without ever going back on her word. This special dream became an incentive for her to do good, be united to God and care for others.
