The Late Zhou period also heralded the ‘Warring States Era’ which saw almost three centuries of bitter rivalry and warfare between a mass of fractured Chinese kingdoms. Eventually the kingdom of Qin, on the western edge of early China would conquer the rest, while the Shu and Ba people were also brought into the kingdom for the first time.

Born Ying Zheng in Handan in BCE, Qin Shi Huang (Ch’in Shih-hung) was nominally the son of the king of Qin but may have actually been the offspring of his father’s

Li Xin 李信, courtesy name Youcheng 有成, was a general of the state of Qin 秦 during the very late Warring States period 戰國 (5th cent BCE). He hailed from Huaili 槐里 (today's Xingping 興平, Shaanxi). His father Li Yao 李瑤 was governor (taishou 太守) of the commandery of Nanjun 南郡 and was invested as Marquis of Didao 狄道侯.

In , Li Xin was made general under the supreme command of Wang Jian 王翦 during the campaign against the state of Zhao 趙. Li Xin marched from Taiyuan 太原 and liaised with Wang Jian to encircle the army of Zhao and closed a ring around the capital of Zhao, Handan 邯鄲 (today in Hebei). The campaign ended with the destruction of Zhao.

Just after this historic victory, the army of Qin marched towards the northeast to attack the capital of Yan 燕, Jicheng 薊城 (today's Beijing). King Xi of Yan 燕王喜 (r. ) and the heir apparent Prince Dan 太子丹 fled to the region of Liaodong 遼東 farther east, but Li Xin defeated the Prince's last army at River Yan 衍水 (Hunhe 渾河, Liaodong), and the King killed Prince Dan.

In this Chinese name, the family name is Li.

Li Xin (李信), courtesy nameYoucheng (有成), was a Great general of Qin during the Warring States era. Alongside Wang Jian, Wang Ben and other generals, Li Xin served under Qin Shi Huang (Ying Zheng) in his conquest of the six Warring States. He is also the great-great grandfather of Li Guang, a Han dynasty general.

Early life

As a son of the governor of Nanjun Commandery, Li Yao, he served during Qin Shi Huang's reign, initially as a footsoldier, then rose through the ranks through sheer determination and his background.

Wang Jian ordered Li to capture Handan to finalize the fall of Zhao, which he did successfully.

Yan state

After the fall of Zhao in BCE, Wang Jian's army stationed in Zhongshan started preparations for an offensive war against Yan. Ju Wu (鞠武), a Yan minister, proposed to Xi, King of Yan, to form alliances with the Dai, Qi, and Chu states, and make peace with the Xiongnu in the north, as a preemptive measure in preparation for the Qin invasion.
