Clark County History: Horticulturist Hulda Klager
What famed horticulturist Luther Burbank is to Santa Rosa, Calif., Hulda Klager is to Woodland. Burbank was her inspiration. To learn botany, she studied his writings, seed catalogs and gardening books. The two even corresponded. Both owned the rare knack for picking the right plants to crossbreed.
After Hulda’s birth in Germany in , the Thiel family immigrated to the United States with 2-year-old Hulda just after the Civil War. Inching west, first farming in Wisconsin and then Minnesota, the Thiels eventually found themselves in the Woodland vicinity in , when Hulda was Their wagon bogged down in the Lewis River bottoms. Seeing a nearby cabin, the family moved in for the night. The following day, stunned by roses near the cabin’s door, they decide to stay and build a home.
World renowned for her lilacs, Hulda started plant propagation in because mealy apples didn’t peel easily or make tasty pies for her husband, Frank Klager, whom she married at After solving her apple pie problem, she dabbled in dahlias before turning to the lilacs that made her internationally famous. The Lilac Lady: Hulda Klager's work preserved at historic gardens
WOODLAND, Cowlitz County &#; Hulda Klager was 83 years old in the spring of , when the Columbia and Lewis rivers swelled with heavy rains, rushed past her protests and flooded her prized lilac garden.
She had named and nurtured the shrubs and plants for 45 years.
They all died.
But Klager was a tough woman, who had already overcome her size (she was not quite five feet tall but bore four children), circumstances (she tumbled out West in a covered wagon and married a dairy farmer when she was 16) and expectations (at one time, she had hybridized 64 of the varieties recognized by the International Lilac Society in Ontario, Canada).
Friends, family and strangers brought back rare species she had thought were lost forever. She replanted and relandscaped. Two years later, the garden was replenished. And when she died in , at the age of 96, it was only after she had just finished another day working the river-dredged soil, just as she had done for half a century.

In this episode of Someone Lived Here, Kendra brings you to the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens in Woodland, Washington. The home was built by Hulda's family, The Thiel's in Hulda Klager would purchase the home and move in in her 40s.
She became interested in the work of Luther Burbank, a horticulturist and hybridized. She had been inspired by the book New Creations in Plant Life by William Sumner Harwood, which detailed Luther Burbanks process. Hulda Klager began her own experiments with hybridization: first with apples, then lilacs. Behind the house is a large garden filled with lilacs, many of which were Hulda's creations.

Hulda Klager
Hulda Klager, a Woodland resident who died in at age 96, is remembered widely for her propagation of lilacs.
She grew many different varieties and named some for family, friends and neighbors.
Klager came to Woodland in , but her infatuation with propagation did not start until , when she read a book by Luther Burbank. She experimented with dahlias, apples and roses before finally devoting most of her time with lilacs.
The death of her husband, Frank, in caused her to consider giving up the lilac work, but a son encouraged her to continue.
The Columbia river flood of was another blow: It killed her lilacs and inundated her home. But people who owned variteties of Klager lilacs donated their clippings so she could start over.
Many organizations presented awards and gave special recongition to &#;The Lilac Lady&#; for her work. A Woodland history of mentioned that although Klager was 94, &#;she still gets around in her flowers, weather permitting.&#;
Preservation of the Klager home and garden was made possible when Daisy Button Grotvik traded land she owned in Woodland Bottoms for the Klager property. Volunteers now maintain the old Klager home and gardens.
