Louis-Joseph Janvier est né à Port-au-Prince en Il appartenait à une famille protestante d'artisans du Morne-à-Tuf. À l'âge de douze ans, il entre au lycée Pétion et une fois ses études secondaires terminées, entre à l'école de médecine. Ayant obtenu une bourse du gouvernement, il se rend en France pour y poursuivre ses études de médecine. En , il a vingt-six ans, il est docteur en médecine. Sa thèse porte sur la phtisie pulmonaire, ses causes et ses traitements préventifs. Sa soutenance est remarquable, Louis-Joseph Janvier sortant d'ailleurs lauréat de sa promotion. Il s'inscrit alors à Sciences politiques et en sort avec trois diplômes ; un pour la section administrative, un second pour la section économique et un troisième pour la section diplomatique. Il obtiendra aussi une licence en droit à Lille. À Paris, il fait partie des habitués du salon de Leconte de Lisle et y noue des relations avec Coppé, Mallarmé et Hérédia. Il est honoré de l'amitié de Judith Gauthier, femme de lettres et membre de l'Académie Goncourt. Le savant géographe Élisée Reclus lui témoigne également son estime. Abstract
Ideas of hierarchy, inferiority and racial inequality predominated in the work of certain European intellectuals of the 18th and 19th centuries on the idea of ‘races’. The Société d’Ethnologie de Paris (SEP) and the Société d’Anthropologie de Paris (SAP) are two French institutions that had intellectuals who participated in the consolidation of these conceptions. Since the 18th century there have been criticism by black intellectuals; however, with the emergence of the First Black Republic of the modern era in Haiti, these criticisms gained new contours. Many Haitian intellectuals in the first and second half of the 19th century dedicated themselves to combating hierarchical ways of thinking, demonstrating their inconsistencies.
