Montessori’s Life
Maria Montessori was born in Chiaravalle, Ancona, Italy, on August 31, and died in Noordwijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, on May 6, Over the course of her life, she spent prolonged periods in many countries running training courses for teachers who sought to implement her pedagogical philosophy, and she lived for extended periods in Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and India. Like William James or Sigmund Freud, she did not begin her career as a professional philosopher. Instead, she studied technical engineering in her secondary school and then enrolled at the University of Rome (La Sapienza) in , where after two years of study in the natural sciences and then supplementary exams in Latin and Italian, she was admitted as a third-year medical student, becoming one of the first women in Italy to attend medical school (see Matellicani for detailed discussion of her years at the University of Rome). According to one biographer, early in her life she wanted to be “anything but a teacher” (Standing 23), and she always identified more as a scientist of human nature than as a teacher per se. Maria Montessori was born on 31 August in the town of Chiaravalle, Italy. Her father, Alessandro, was an accountant in the civil service, and her mother, Renilde Stoppani, was well educated and had a passion for reading.
The Montessori family moved to Rome in late , and in the young Maria enrolled in the local state school on Via di San Nicolo da Tolentino. As her education progressed, she began to break through the barriers which constrained women’s careers. From to she continued her studies at the Regio Istituto Tecnico Leonardo da Vinci, which she entered with the intention of becoming an engineer. This was unusual at the time as most girls who pursued secondary education studied the classics rather than going to technical school.
Upon her graduation, Montessori’s parents encouraged her to take up a career in teaching, one of the few occupations open to women at the time, but she was determined to enter medical school and become a doctor. Her father opposed this course—medical school was then an all-male preserve—and initially Maria was refused entry by the head of school. She was undeterred, apparently ending the unsuccessful interview with the professor by saying, “I know
