The very first step in this process involvesassessing our greatest strengths and opportunities, and that is where theDisciple Maker Index (DMI) comes in! The DMI is an important survey tool that invites you to reflect on your discipleship journey here at SPB.
The Disciple Maker Index is designed to:
- Invite parishioners to reflect on their journey of discipleship.
- Enable parish leadership to make data-driven decisions.
- Help parishioners grow in their faith.
All responses will be confidential, and the parish will only receive information about the community as a whole.

Parish Mission Statement
In , Father George Daly of St. John the Evangelist Church in Hapeville, Georgia began the campaign to establish a Catholic parish in Clayton County. He was given permission by Atlanta Bishop Francis E. Hyland to begin the process. In , the Hutcheson brothers offered their old drugstore building, located on South Main Street in Jonesboro, to be used as a site for St. Philip Benizi Mission Church. There, on September 12, , Father Daniel J. O'Connor celebrated the first Mass on South Main Street.
It was soon evident that a larger facility was needed to accommodate the overflow of people. A committee was formed to search for a suitable site for a new church, and, in September of , the building committee purchased acres of land on Flint River Road. Construction on the building began in January of , and was completed on April 30, This building, which served as the first church, is now our Parish Hall. The new building was blessed in the Fall of by Archbishop Paul J. Hallinan.
Membership grew from the original 35 chartered families to families and on June 3, , St. Philip Benizi Mission officially became a parish. The growth of the Catholic community in the

PASTOR FR. RUSSELL GOVERNALE, OFM CONV.
I, Fr. Russell Governale, am the third of five children of +Russell J. and Sara E. (Sally) Governale. I was born in “beautiful Brooklyn”, NY and I have one brother, who lives in Peachtree City, GA and three sisters, all of whom live in different towns in New Jersey. My siblings are all married and have children (and my brother has granddaughters!).
I attended Catholic grade school and High School and joined the Conventual Franciscan Friars after High School graduation. I made my Novitiate beginning in August, and professed Simple Vows in I then went to our College Seminary (St. Hyacinth College-Seminary) graduating in with a BA in Philosphy. As was common at that time, I then had an Apostolic year at St. Francis High School in Hamburg, NY where I taught Religion and Spanish. At the end of that year, in August, , I professed my Solemn Vows.
I was blessed to be asked to continue my studies for the Priesthood at our International Faculty in Rome, Italy (the Seraphicum: Facolta San Bonaventura in Urbe.) There, I received and STB in Theology and was ordained a Deacon in April, &n
