Monirul Islam is a pre-eminent printmaker. Brilliant in their humane expression, his abstract works with geometric motifs, subtle use of lyrical lines and a harmonious colour balance between space and composition narrate human emotions, joy, sufferings, and memories.
Born in in Jamalpur, Bangladesh, Monirul Islam spent his childhood in Sherpur and Kishoreganj. The family later settled in their home district Chandpur. As a child Islam would spend hours observing nature in the vast lowlands in Kishoreganj and the seemingly endless bank of the River Meghna in Chandpur. At the time, cinema posters were also a big attraction, which he faithfully copied and coloured.
Islam finished school late, at the age of 22, and then enrolled at East Pakistan College of Arts and Crafts. After graduation, he joined as a teacher in In , he received a scholarship at Madrid Academy of Fine Arts. Since then the artist has been staying in Spain, but in no way has he been detached from Bangladesh. In the last 40 years Islam established his own artistic vocabulary which is re

Despite living abroad, Monirul Islam has contributed largely to the Bangladeshi art movement. He is thought to be of most influence in the s, however, he has actually been able to continually change not only the regional Bangladeshi art scene, but the global one as well. His works showcase themes of humankind and its complexities, balances, and charms – branching out by using several mediums to express it.
Upon achieving his Bachelor’s in Fine Arts, he was awarded a scholarship by the Spanish Government, which enabled him to further his education there. He has learned from several Bangladeshi, as well as Spanish artists, and established his own arts education known as ‘Monir’s School’ in Spain.

Despite being one of the most prominent artists of Bangladesh, Monirul Islam has contributed to Bangladesh’s art scene while staying abroad. Even though, he is credited by fine art critics and experts as having been one of the most influential artist of the ’60s, however, in reality, he has managed to create a profound change, not just in art of this region, but also the contemporary global scene in general.
