“The Girl from Ipanema” was the first song Gilberto ever recorded professionally, and it became the song for which she was best known. When she recorded it, she was the young wife of Brazilian bossa nova legend João Gilberto (–), who was in the midst of a collaboration with jazz saxophone great Stan Getz (–). No one had planned to include Gilberto in the recording, but when they asked her to contribute the English language verses of “The Girl from Ipanema,” she agreed. Her untrained voice – whispery and detached, but spot-on throughout the song’s unusual musical progression – made the song a hit as it made her a star, even though her vocals weren’t credited when the track was released as a single.

Astrud Gilberto delivered the memorably breathy, disaffected vocals on the hit “Girl from Ipanema” creating a style that suddenly seemed iconic: modern, international, and archly cool. Gilberto was born Astrud Weinert on March 30, , in Salvador, Bahia, a state in northeastern Brazil. The family settled in Rio de Janeiro when Astrud was eight, in a home on the Avenida Atlântica, which ran along the oceanfront. Astrud Gilberto, the Brazilian bossa nova singer best known for The Girl from Ipanema, has died aged
One of Brazil's biggest stars of the s and 70s, she recorded 16 albums and worked with artists ranging from Quincy Jones to George Michael.
Her version of The Girl From Ipanema sold more than five million copies and helped to popularise bossa nova.
Sofia Gilberto, the artist's granddaughter, broke the news of her death on Instagram.
"I'm here to bring you the sad news that my grandmother became a star today, and is next to my grandfather João Gilberto," wrote Sofia, who is also a musician.
"She was a pioneer and the best. At the age of 22, she gave voice to the English version of Girl from Ipanema and gained international fame."
Paul Ricci, a New York-based guitarist who collaborated with Gilberto, also confirmed the news on Facebook.
