At the forefront of modern dance for more than 50 years, internationally acclaimed dance Artist Margie Gillis is one of the most influential Canadian choreographers/dancers of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Margie Gillis was born on July 9th, in Montreal, Quebec, into a family of athletes where corporeal experience and physical prowess were essential aspects of daily life. In , she founded the Margie Gillis Dance Foundation in Montreal. Over the decades, Margie has created a rich repertory of more than one hundred and fifty creations, solos, duets, and group works, which have been performed around the globe. Establishing herself as an innovative choreographer, she built her career as a solo dancer, distinguishing herself with her naturalistic style and inimitable stage presence, and her iconic long cascading hair. Internationally acclaimed choreographer and dancer Margie Gillis’ art has spanned over nearly five decades, shattering norms and inspiring audiences along the way. In , the Margie Gillis Dance Foundation celebrated 50 years of creation and dance, with a repertoire of more than one hundred and fifty works.
In , she launched the Legacy Project, an initiative dedicated to transmitting Margie’s concepts of creation, teaching, and her humanitarian vision. Her numerous awards and distinctions include the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award’s Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award. She is also Knight of the Ordre national du Québec and Officer of the Order of Canada. In , she received an Honorary Doctorate degree from Concordia University in recognition of her extraordinary contributions to modern dance, teaching and activism as one of the most influential dancers and choreographers of her generation.
Margie B. Gillis, Ed.D is a nationally recognized literacy expert and a Certified Academic Language Therapist who has been teaching children of all ages to read for over 40 years. She received her Doctorate of Education from the University of Louisville in Special Education. In , Margie founded Literacy How, Inc. to provide professional development opportunities and coaching for teachers on how best to implement evidence-based reading practices in the classroom.
Margie has worked at the policy level through the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE). She was instrumental in Connecticut’s adoption of a universal screening test for K-3 students, implementing the Connecticut Foundations of Reading Test as part of the certification process for pre-service teachers, and for the design and execution of the Connecticut K-3 Literacy Initiative. Margie was recently a member of the CSDE’s SLD/Dyslexia Workgroup.
She is the co-founder and former president of Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities, the former president of the CT Branch of the International Dyslexia Society, a board member of the Dyslexia Society of CT, New Alliance Foundation, and The Alliance for Accreditation
